Most 5-tier metal shelving units are designed to go together with a rubber mallet (optional) and your hands—no drill, wrench set, or specialty hardware required. The key is to work on a flat surface, follow the part orientation carefully, and fully “seat” each shelf before moving to the next one.
Start by unpacking and sorting parts: four posts (often split into top and bottom sections), five shelves, and plastic split sleeves or collars that lock shelves in place. Confirm you have the correct number of sleeves (typically four per shelf level). If your posts come in two pieces, connect the bottom and top sections first, making sure the threaded or tapered ends match as intended.
Next, decide on your shelf heights. Slide a pair of split sleeves around each post at the same height mark—one sleeve pair per shelf corner. The sleeves usually taper; install them so the thicker edge supports the shelf when it slides down. Repeat for all four posts, keeping the sleeve positions level with each other so the shelf won’t rock.
With the bottom shelf first, angle the shelf onto the four posts and lower it until it contacts the sleeves. Press down firmly at each corner. If it feels stubborn, a few light taps with a rubber mallet on the shelf corners can help—avoid metal hammers that can dent the finish. Once the bottom shelf is secure, stand the unit upright and check for wobble. Adjust by reseating corners rather than forcing the posts.
Install the remaining shelves one at a time, repeating: sleeves at the chosen height, shelf lowered onto sleeves, then press/tap each corner until fully seated. Finish by placing the top shelf, then gently push the unit from different sides to confirm everything is locked in.

Move the unit to the flattest spot available and fully reseat each shelf corner so the sleeves lock evenly. If it still rocks, use thin shims under the lowest post(s) and keep heavier items on the bottom tiers.
